Movie Night: Stormy Weather
We’ve been talking about it for ages and now we are finally getting treated to a proper viewing of the classic musical Stormy Weather, courtesy of Boogie Back instructor, top notch Lindy Hopper, and bringer of the party Sam Sserwanga (who is also celebrating his birthday this weekend… wink, wink, nudge nudge).
Stormy Weather is, of course, the classic 1943 musical starring Lena Horne and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson – considered one of the best of Hollywood’s musical golden era, and one of the only to include a cast of black actors and singers. Set in the world of 1930s showbiz, the film also features jazz all-stars Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, and the Nicholas Brothers. If you don’t already recognize the eponymous song performed by Lena Horne or the now iconic Nicholas Brothers staircase routine from the film, you will after tonight.
The film has drawn a great deal of attention in the swing dance community in recent years as one of the few swing-era movies featuring jazz dancing from original dance artists. To read more about the film, see some general notes here and a scene-by-scene breakdown here.
This is a free cinematic adventure so please bring a piece of the party with you: drinks, snacks, blankets, cushions, and any other goodies.
Sam will be hosting the movie night at his place – he will give you the address when you RSVP at Sam@boogiebackdance.com. Space is limited so book ASAP!
