Beginner Balboa Workshop
Keen for something a bit different? Join us to learn some Balboa: a partnered swing dance that originated in California while the lindy hop was taking off on the East Coast. Danced to the same swinging music, Balboa developed a closer connection due to the crowded dance floors it filled. Less energetic than lindy hop, and more footwork-focused, balboa can be danced at high tempos with ease.
When: Sunday 22 October, 10h30-12h30
Where: Alive Dance Studio, Muizenberg
Cost: R250 (CTS Members get 30% off)
What to expect:
In Part 1 of the workshop, we’ll introduce you to the fundamentals of balboa: posture, connection, basic footwork patterns.
In Part 2, we’ll guide you through leading and following some pure balboa and bal-swing variations.
By the end of the full workshop, you should be able to comfortably social dance some balboa basics to fast, swinging big band jazz!
Who is this for?
This workshop is beginner-friendly, specially designed for those who have never tried balboa before, and for those who have danced other types of dances but want to try this out.
Even though balboa is also part of the swing dance family, it is quite different to lindy hop. Therefore, no lindy hop experience is needed: in fact, better to leave your lindy hop at the door, so that you can learn anew! That said, lindy hoppers: learning some balboa will definitely help improve your partner connection, responsiveness and footwork.
