Echoes of Sophiatown: The Pebble Shakers celebrate Heritage Day

ECHOES OF SOPHIATOWN: Celebrating the heritage of South African township swing music with The Pebble Shakers

Bring your two left feet and join us for an evening of historical township jazz with the popular Pebble Shakers, a band that specialises in keeping alive the swinging sounds of Sophiatown, the birthplace of SA jazz.

Back in what could now be called SA’s own swing era, local artists found inspiration in the swinging jazz they heard on radio, all the way from the USA. The unique sound that developed (an amalgam of Swing Era jazz and South African marabi rhythms) was – and is – perfect for dancing.

While the apartheid government sought to stamp out this emerging culture that naturally brought people of different backgrounds together, the music has found its way back into the public eye: swing dancers and jazz lovers around the world are falling in love with it all over again.

Featuring covers of songs by:
Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, Spokes Mashiyane, The Manhattan Brothers, Kippie Moeketsi, Dorothy Masuka, Lenny Mabaso, The Alexandra All Star Band, Zacks Nkosi, Hugh Masekela and more…

Celebrate the heritage of South African jazz with us, on Saturday 24 September at Truth Coffee Roasting. The Pebble Shakers will swing the room while Cape Town Swing introduces you to simple ways to get social dancing.
